Surrey Safety Camera Partnership is now offering low-end speeders the opportunity to attend a speed awareness training course as an alternative to a fine and penalty points.

Low end speeders are those who are detected speeding within the ACPO defined range of the speed limit +10%+2mph up to the speed limit +10%+6mph.

The four hour classroom based presentation follows a nationally-approved syllabus and will be delivered by specially selected approved road safety specialists. Courses will be run by AA DriveTech and held at different venues in Surrey- currently Guildford, Staines & Betchworth.

The course aims to generate a better understanding of the consequences of speeding and raise awareness of the importance of sticking to speed limits. The course also helps drivers recognise speed limits and provides instruction on driving more carefully.

Drivers who meet the eligibility currently pay £73.57 to attend the course which covers the cost of administering and delivering the scheme. However, in order to keep course pricing in line with neighbouring forces, the price of speed awareness courses offered by Surrey Police will be £97.07 for all bookings taken from September 1st, 2010 onwards. A proportion of this amount will contribute towards the provision of improved road safety in Surrey.

The course will NOT be offered to drivers who exceed the speed limit excessively, or those who have attended a national speed awareness course within the last three years (from the date of the offence). Drivers can choose to attend an equivalent course elsewhere in the country if that is more suitable.

Referrals to the course are only as a result of camera-captured speed offences and so will only be via the Surrey Safety Camera Partnership.
